Solar incentives by state in 2026

The federal picture is the same everywhere now: no credit for homeowners who buy, 30 percent to the owner under a lease or PPA. The state picture is completely different in each of the four states we serve. Every figure on these pages carries the regulator, utility or statute it came from.

New York

New York is the only state we cover where a homeowner on a lease or a PPA can still personally claim a meaningful state tax credit.

New Jersey

New Jersey pays you for every megawatt-hour your system generates, for 15 years, on top of full retail net metering.

Connecticut

Connecticut runs a 20-year tariff instead of net metering, and you choose which of two structures you go on before you sign.

Florida

Florida has no state rebate and no state tax credit. What it has is 1:1 net metering, two tax exemptions and a lot of sun.

3 live incentives. Lease available. PPA not permitted.

What happened to the 30% federal solar tax credit

Terminated for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025, with no phase-down and no safe harbour. Where the money went, who gets it now, and the claims that should make you walk away.

Federal, state, local and utility incentives change, and many have ended or been reduced. The federal residential clean energy tax credit (Internal Revenue Code section 25D) is not available for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025. Eligibility for any remaining incentive depends on your individual circumstances, tax position, property and utility. We do not provide tax, legal or financial advice. Consult a qualified tax professional.

FAQs

Questions people actually ask

Which state we cover has the best solar incentives?
New York, for one specific reason: its state tax credit of up to $5,000 is one of very few in the country that explicitly reaches lease and PPA customers, not just people who buy. New Jersey is next, because $77 per MWh guaranteed for 15 years is real money that compounds. Connecticut's 20-year tariff is strong but restructures after 2027. Florida has no state rebate or credit at all, only exemptions and sunshine.
Are there any federal solar grants for homeowners?
No. The EPA's $7 billion Solar for All program was terminated and remains so; a separate court ruling in August 2026 reinstated a different $20 billion pot, which is not the same thing and does not reach homeowners. USDA REAP expressly excludes residential. There is no federal residential solar grant, and anyone telling you there is has either not checked or is hoping you will not.
