FAQs
Frequently asked questions
Including the ones most solar websites would rather you did not ask.
Is there such a thing as free solar panels?
No. The Federal Trade Commission has published guidance stating that offers of free or no-cost solar panels are scams, and that companies claiming a government program will cover the whole cost are lying. What does exist is a lease or power purchase agreement, where you pay nothing at installation and then pay monthly for 20 to 25 years. That is a real and legitimate product. It is not free and we will not describe it as free.
Is there a government grant for solar in the US?
No residential solar grant exists in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut or Florida. The EPA's Solar for All program was terminated and does not reach homeowners. USDA REAP expressly excludes residential. What exists is state incentives, tax exemptions and financing. The word grant does not describe anything real in US residential solar.
Is the 30 percent federal solar tax credit still available?
Not to homeowners who buy. Section 25D was terminated for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025. Section 48E still carries 30 percent but it goes to whoever owns the system. Full explanation.
Do you install the panels yourselves?
No. We are an independent marketing and referral service. Installations are carried out by Momentum Solar, who hold contractor licenses in all four states we cover. Every quote, contract, price, warranty and installation is theirs.
What does it cost me to use you?
Nothing. We are paid a referral fee by the installer, which does not affect your price.
Will you sell my details to lots of companies?
No. Your details go to Solar Funding USA and to Momentum Solar. The consent you give names both of them specifically rather than pointing at a hidden list of marketing partners. If that ever changes we will ask you again rather than rely on the consent you gave today.
Who will call me, and can I stop it?
Solar Funding USA and Momentum Solar, and only if you tick the consent box. You can revoke at any time by replying STOP to a text, telling us on a call, emailing us, or using our Do Not Call page. We will action it within ten business days and usually far sooner.
Do I have to consent to calls to use the site?
No. Consent is not a condition of anything. If you would rather not be called there is a link under the form to email us your question instead, and you will still get an answer.
Which areas do you cover?
New Jersey statewide, Connecticut statewide, Long Island plus Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Staten Island in New York, and Southwest Florida across Lee, Collier, Charlotte and southern Sarasota counties. Not Manhattan, not Upstate New York. Full coverage list.
Do I need to own my home?
Yes. Solar goes on the roof, so the owner has to agree to it. We cannot help renters, and we would rather tell you that on question two than after you have given us your phone number.
What if my roof is old or heavily shaded?
Then solar may not be right for your home, and some financing routes will decline it outright. Roof condition and shading are assessed before any system is designed. If the answer is no, we will tell you it is no.
Is a solar lease transferable if I sell the house?
Generally yes, subject to the terms of the agreement and the buyer qualifying. It adds a step to the sale. If you expect to move within a few years, raise it before you sign.
What happens if the finance company goes bankrupt?
It is a fair question in 2026. Sunnova, Solar Mosaic, SunPower, PosiGen and Freedom Forever have all filed for bankruptcy protection since 2024, and over 100 US solar companies have failed or closed since 2023. Ask who the finance partner is by name and what happens to the warranty and maintenance obligations if they are no longer trading.
Are you a lender or a broker?
Neither. We do not lend, we do not broker credit, we do not make credit decisions and we receive no payment from any lender. Financing is arranged between you, the installer and a third-party lender on their terms.
What “no upfront cost” means. “No upfront cost” and “$0 down” refer to qualifying solar lease or power purchase agreement (PPA) financing, under which eligible homeowners may have no out-of-pocket cost at the time of installation. Solar panels are not free. Under a lease or PPA a third-party finance company owns the system and the homeowner makes monthly payments, typically over a 20 to 25 year term, often with an annual price escalator. Total payments may exceed the cash price of a comparable system. Eligibility depends on homeownership, credit, roof condition, shading, utility provider, location and other underwriting factors, and is not guaranteed.
